5 Website Mistakes That Quietly Cost You Clients

The worst website problems aren't the obvious ones.

A broken page, you'll notice. A typo, someone will report. But the mistakes that really cost you are the quiet ones, the ones that send visitors away without a trace, while your site looks perfectly fine to you.

Here are five of them. None will show up in a report. All of them are losing you work right now.

1. It's slow

You don't notice your own site being slow, because your browser has it cached and you're not the one deciding whether to wait.

Your visitor is. And on a phone, on mobile data, with three other tabs open, a site that takes more than a few seconds to load gets abandoned before it ever appears. They don't email to tell you. They just leave, and you never know they were there.

Speed isn't a technical nicety. It's the first impression you don't get to make if the page doesn't load.

2. It doesn't say what you do in the first five seconds

Open your homepage and imagine you've never heard of your company. Can you tell, instantly, what they do and who it's for?

A lot of sites lead with something vague, "Welcome," "We're passionate about excellence," a beautiful image with no context. The visitor's question, am I in the right place?, goes unanswered, and uncertainty sends people back to Google faster than almost anything.

Say what you do, plainly, before anything else.

3. The next step isn't obvious

A visitor who's convinced should never have to hunt for how to contact you. Yet so many sites bury the call to action, one small "Contact" link in the corner, a phone number hidden in the footer.

Every extra second of searching is a chance to lose them. Make the next step impossible to miss: one clear action, repeated, obvious.

4. It's built for you, not your customer

This is the subtle one. You know your business inside out, so your site is organised the way you think about it, by your internal service names, your structure, your jargon.

Your customer doesn't think that way. They think in terms of their problem. When your site is organised around your logic instead of their need, they can't find what they came for, even though it's right there.

Write for the person who knows nothing about you and wants one specific thing.

5. Nobody's looking after it

A website isn't a painting you hang and forget. Links break. Plugins age. Content goes stale. Security holes open.

A site that was great at launch and then left alone for two years quietly degrades, and every bit of degradation costs a little trust. The fix isn't dramatic, just someone paying attention on an ongoing basis.

The bottom line

None of these are catastrophic on their own. That's exactly why they're dangerous, they're easy to ignore, and they bleed clients quietly while everything looks fine.

The good news: all five are fixable, and most are quick. The hard part is knowing they're there.

We're Filip & Philip, a Swedish digital studio that finds and fixes the quiet stuff before it costs you. Want to know which of these your site is guilty of? Send it over and we'll tell you, honestly, what we'd fix first.
