Your Google Business Profile Is a Landing Page. Treat It Like One

Ask most firms about their online presence and they will talk about their website. The Google Business Profile, if it comes up at all, is mentioned as an afterthought. Something that was set up once, verified, and left alone.

Here is the uncomfortable truth: for a large share of your potential clients, that profile is the first thing they see of your business. Often it is the only thing. They search for what you do, Google shows your profile next to a map, and a decision starts forming before your website ever loads.

That makes your profile a landing page. And most firms treat their landing pages with far more care than the profile that appears more often.

What people actually see

When someone searches for your firm by name, or for your services in your area, Google assembles a panel from your profile: photos, reviews, opening hours, a description, recent updates. That panel competes with a handful of competitors shown in the same view.

The comparison happens in seconds, and it is brutally visual. A profile with three photos from 2022, no recent activity, and a handful of unanswered reviews signals a business that is coasting. A complete profile with recent updates and thoughtful review responses signals the opposite. Same firms, possibly the same quality of work, entirely different first impressions.

The parts that do the heavy lifting

Not every field matters equally. In our experience, four things carry most of the weight.

Reviews, and your responses to them. The star rating draws the eye, but the responses are where trust is built. A calm, specific reply to a critical review does more for credibility than ten five-star ratings, because it shows how you treat people when something goes wrong.

Photos. Real ones. Your office, your team, your work. Stock imagery on a Business Profile is worse than nothing, because it reads as evasive. Firms selling expertise often struggle here, but even a well-photographed workspace beats a generic skyline.

The description and categories. Google uses these to decide which searches you appear for. A vague description costs you visibility for the specific services people actually search for.

Updates. Regular posts tell both Google and potential clients that the business is active. They also give you control over what the profile leads with, instead of leaving that to chance.

Why activity compounds

A Business Profile is not a set-and-forget asset, and this is actually good news. Because most of your competitors do treat it that way, consistent small effort stands out quickly.

Google’s local rankings respond to engagement signals: profile completeness, review velocity, response rates, post frequency. None of these require heroics. They require rhythm. A weekly update, reviews answered within a few days, photos refreshed when something changes. Over months, that rhythm quietly moves you up the local results while static competitors stay put.

A short checklist

If you want to know where you stand, look at your profile the way a stranger would. Search your main service plus your city in a private browser window and find yourself next to your competitors.

Then check five things: Is every field filled in, including services and description? Are your photos real and reasonably current? Does every review from the past year have a response? Is there any update newer than three months? Does the profile link to a page on your site that actually matches what the searcher wanted?

If you answered no more than twice, your most-seen landing page is underperforming, and fixing it is one of the highest-leverage marketing tasks available to you.

At Filip & Philip we treat the Business Profile as part of the website project, not an appendix to it, because clients experience them as one thing. If you would like an outside pair of eyes on yours, get in touch.
